| September 11, 2001 proved that even the people living behind the greatest of armed forces can be subject to attack. On that fateful day, communication technology played a big part in determining who lived and who died in the 2 hours after the initial attack. Radio systems failed for first responders. People in authority with insufficient information broadcast erroneous instructions. Trapped civilians on the upper floors of the WTC had no audible guidance on how to best attempt to descend. Much has been done to improve radio-based systems and the interagency communications since that deadly day. More can be done.
